Rescue Helpers Unite

In my first post I mentioned that I volunteer as a dog transporter, I do this through the forum Rescue Helpers Unite. Which can be found here through the site you can see if any transport runs, assessments or home checks are needed to be done that are in your local area. So far I have completed 2 runs, the first being an 13 year old black Labrador called Byron and the second being an 18 month old very bouncy black Labrador called Jack. These two boys were so sweet and if I could I could have taken them home with me!

Although I have only transported black labs all breeds (and crosses!)  are on the forum needing transport. If you see a run you can do you post on there which section you can cover. Most runs cover long distances so it's not often that you will carry out the whole run. To drop the dog off  with other volunteers you usually meet at services stations, so if you ever see a dog being handed to another person that could be a dog run!

I would highly recommend doing it if you have a car and don't  mind driving long distances. It's perfect for me as during Uni I don't have my dog with me and I miss him greatly so I get to spend time with lovely dogs whilst helping them.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

The lovely Byron!

New blog, first post!

Recently my life has taken a new direction, I've changed my ideal career path and this will heavily involve dogs. In particular I want to work in animal health research, after talking to dog owners at Crufts this year genetics and health in dogs is an ongoing battle which I want to work in. This Summer I will be undertaking a weeks work experience at the Animal Health Trust which is based down in Suffolk which I am very excited for!

But seeing as this is my first blog post I feel like I should introduce myself, my name is Rachel I'm 20 and I'm studying Biological Sciences at University in Nottingham. I own a 12 year old Golden Retriever who lives at home with my parents. I miss him a lot when I'm away at Uni, but have started volunteering with animal rescue centres and charities involved in transporting dogs across the country to avoid them being put to sleep or to be placed in their new foster homes.

This blog will mainly be about my involvement with dogs from volunteering to attending dog shows, I hope to post plenty of pictures of these! So if you love dogs and dog sports stay tuned!
